How to Call 911 Using the Emergency SOS on the iPhone 14 through Satellite.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro now have access to Emergency SOS via satellite. If there is no cellular or Wi-Fi service, the feature connects users with nearby emergency dispatch centres using satellite connectivity through a cooperation with the Globalstar satellite communications business.
Your iPhone 14 will ping one of the 24 low-orbit satellites operated by Globalstar if an emergency arises. When one of the satellite's ground stations receives the data, it routes the call to a regional dispatch centre or a backup centre if the dispatch centre is unable to receive 911 text messages.
These relay centres are staffed by specialists from both Apple and outside companies who have received emergency protocol training. They interact with dispatchers and pass information back and forth. It's a bit of a catch-22 to test out this feature. Apple really doesn't want you to test it out when you're not in an emergency and sincerely hopes that you never have to use it.
Did you realise that making a false 911 call, which is what you would be doing, is illegal? Apple doesn't want you to do that, so yeah. That being stated, learning how to use Emergency SOS via satellite is best done when there isn't actually an emergency. The last thing you need to worry about when in mortal danger is navigating through your settings to find the feature.
To allow consumers to test it out in a non-emergency circumstance, Apple has created a demo mode. This capability is available while calling 911, texting 911, using Siri, or using Crash Detection in a location without cellular coverage or Wi-Fi. If you have Apple Watch set up to transport emergency services through your iPhone, it can also be triggered via Fall Detection.
When the SOS indicator displays at the upper right corner of the screen, indicating there is no cellular or Wi-Fi access and satellite service is available, emergency SOS via satellite is ready to activate. The function can only be used with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models because it is powered by a combination of hardware and software components.
